The town of Byaduk
Byaduk is located in South West Victoria only 59 kilometres North of Port Fairy and just 25 kilometres South of Hamilton along the C184. Byaduk lies within the indigenous ancestral lands of the Gunditjmara and the word Byaduk is thought to be an Aboriginal term for stone axe. European settlement in the vicinity of Byaduk began in the mid 19th century. Among the first Europeans to settle at Byaduk were immigrants from Scotland and Central Europe (known as Wends or Sorbs). Some early Scottish family names in Byaduk were Christie and Fraser and an early Wendish family name was Rentsch.
In Byaduk during the 1860’s there were three general stores. One was owned by George Harman, another by Joseph Witton and the third by John Cannon. Cannon’s store opened in 1863 was the forerunner of today’s a Byaduk Second-Hand Store. After Cannon, the proprietors were Lowry and John Anderson and then John Lindsay before Charles Munt in 1877 built the present building from which a Byaduk Second-Hand Store now operates. Subsequent owners of the building after Munt include John Ross, Jane Ross, Alexander Anderson and Alfred Anderson. In 1939 the Pearse family took over the general store and ran it for the next 62 years until 2001.
Recently acquired by Brian, the building is now being restored under heritage overlay. Home to a large variety of items, a Byaduk Second-Hand Store prides itself on recycling quality goods. Why buy a new item? Second-hand alternatives with character and charm have already been produced (and have stood the test of time!).
Most stock is locally sourced and Brian is constantly buying furniture (in any condition), glassware, kitchenwares, picture frames, prints, photo albums and tools. Come and visit this historic, bluestone store for an item that not only is priced to save you money but also helps to save the environment by recycling.
